MP salaries, allowances & pensions revised effective April 2023

Public representatives receive financial benefits to support their duties and responsibilities.

The Indian government has increased the salaries, allowances, and pensions of Members of Parliament (MPs), effective April 1, 2023.

The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs issued a gazette notification confirming these changes during the budget session of Parliament.

The monthly salary for Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members has been raised from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.24 lakh.

Additionally, the daily allowance has increased from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500. These adjustments aim to align MPs’ earnings with rising inflation and living expenses.

The last salary revision took place in April 2018, when the base salary was set at ₹1 lakh per month.

Apart from their salary, MPs receive ₹70,000 as a constituency allowance to cover expenses related to voter engagement and office maintenance. They also get ₹60,000 per month as an office allowance. These amounts will now increase in line with the latest revision.

The pension for former MPs has also been raised from ₹25,000 to ₹31,000 per month.

Additionally, those who served beyond five years will receive an extra ₹2,500 per year of service, up from ₹2,000 previously.

MPs enjoy several privileges beyond salaries and pensions. They receive an annual allowance for phone and internet services.

Each MP and their family members can avail 34 free domestic flights per year. They also have unlimited first-class train travel and can claim mileage allowances for road travel.

The government provides MPs with 50,000 free electricity units and 4,000 kiloliters of water annually.

Their housing in New Delhi is rent-free for the duration of their five-year term.

Based on seniority, they may receive hostel rooms, apartments, or bungalows. Those who choose not to use official accommodations can claim a monthly housing allowance.

This revision reflects the government’s commitment to supporting MPs in their roles while keeping up with economic conditions.
