Rajdhani Express celebrates 56 years of service connecting Delhi – Howrah
The Rajdhani Express, a flagship train in the Indian Railways network, has successfully completed 56 years since its first journey.
Launched on March 1, 1969, the inaugural Rajdhani Express connected Delhi and Howrah, marking a significant milestone in the Indian Railways history.
Over the years, despite several changes and advancements in the railway sector, the Rajdhani Express has remained a top choice for travellers due to its premium services and punctuality.
Key Facts about the Rajdhani Express:
- The first-ever Rajdhani Express made its debut on March 1, 1969, running between Delhi and Howrah.
- The train departs from Howrah Junction at 4:50 PM, arriving in New Delhi at 10:05 AM, as Train No. 12301 Howrah-New Delhi Rajdhani Express.
- Conversely, Train No. 12302 New Delhi-Howrah Junction Rajdhani Express departs New Delhi at 4:50 PM and reaches Howrah at 9:55 AM.

In 2019, the Rajdhani Express celebrated its 50th anniversary, an important milestone in its long and celebrated journey.
To commemorate the occasion, passengers travelling on the Kolkata Rajdhani Express were greeted with special SMS messages, new linen, and disposable napkins featuring the 50-year anniversary theme. Additionally, a celebratory cake was cut, and the railway staff wore special badges.
Greeting messages were displayed on the train’s destination boards, the video wall at the station, and relayed through the public address system both on the train and at the stations.
The Rajdhani Express’s legacy continues to grow as it remains a symbol of luxury and reliability in Indian rail travel.
In addition to these celebrations, the Indian government has also undertaken a major initiative to enhance train travel on the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes.
Approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) under Prime Minister Modi, the project aims to increase the maximum speed of trains to 160 km/h on these busy routes.
With an estimated investment of ₹6,806 crore for Delhi-Mumbai and ₹6,685 crore for Delhi-Howrah, the project was initially expected to be completed by 2022-23.
However, these upgrades will ensure that the Rajdhani Express and other trains operating on these routes will offer even faster, more efficient services for years to come.
