BKD Milk’s Cow Currency transforms the urban milk supply
Urban residents often struggle to find pure, unadulterated milk. For Jyoti Padma, this challenge turned into a mission that transformed her life and the lives of many others.
Her innovative Cow Currency model, which connects consumers directly to ethical dairy farming, has become a beacon of sustainable living in bustling cities.
Jyoti’s journey began when her infant daughter was diagnosed with lactose intolerance, a condition unfamiliar to their family.
Despite trying various brands and locally sourced milk, her child couldn’t tolerate it. A breakthrough occurred when Jyoti’s sister in Lucknow sent milk from her farm, which her daughter digested effortlessly.
This experience highlighted the need for a consistent and reliable source of pure milk.
Determined to solve this issue, Jyoti embarked on a self-taught journey into dairy farming.
Despite her background in textile engineering and no prior farming experience, she learned through trial and error.
In 2019, she set up Sree Balkrishna Dairy Farm on leased land in Maharashtra, focusing on producing A2 milk, known for its health benefits, especially for those with lactose intolerance.
Her farm practices emphasize the ethical treatment of animals. Cows are fed organic fodder like Napier grass and millets, allowed to roam freely, and milked by hand.
This commitment to humane practices ensures that the milk retains its nutritional quality and reaches customers within hours of collection.
The Cow Currency concept adds a personal touch, allowing customers to adopt a cow virtually, name it, and receive milk directly from it. This approach bridges the urban-rural divide, offering city dwellers a sense of ownership and connection to nature.
Customers like Puspanjali Dutta cherish the nostalgia this model evokes, while others like Simple, who has Celiac disease, praise the product’s health benefits.
Today, the farm serves over 200 families daily and generates ₹1 crore annually.
Jyoti’s innovative approach is not just a business; it’s a movement towards sustainable and ethical farming practices.
By combining tradition, technology, and care for the environment, Jyoti Padma has shown how one person’s determination can create a ripple effect, redefining urban access to fresh, pure milk.
