In the realm of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing, Murali Divi, the founder of Divi’s Labs, stands tall as one of the top three players globally, boasting a staggering market capitalization of nearly ₹1.3 lakh crores (over $17 billion).

Murali Divi’s origins trace back to a modest small town in Andhra Pradesh, where his father eked out a living as a government employee.

There was a time when the family relied on a meagre monthly pension of ₹10,000.

Driven by ambition, Murali Divi pursued a career in chemistry, following in the footsteps of his elder brothers.

However, in 1976, he embarked on a transformative journey to the United States.

At the age of 25, armed with just ₹500, he ventured abroad and kick-started his career as a pharmacist.

Murali Divi’s initial stint was with Warners Hindustan Company, where he earned a mere ₹250.

Nevertheless, he harbored a dream, a vision for the future. With no concrete plans but $40,000 in his pocket, he returned to India, ready to take on the world.

In 1984, Murali Divi joined forces with Kallam Anji Reddy to establish Cheminor, a venture that would eventually merged with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories in 2000.

Following six years at Dr Reddy’s Labs, Murali Divi’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to launch Divi’s Laboratories in 1990.

His vision was clear: to develop commercial processes for manufacturing APIs and intermediates.

The company’s first manufacturing facility sprung to life in Choutuppal, Telangana, in 1995.

In 2002, a second manufacturing unit near Visakhapatnam was added to the growing enterprise.

Hyderabad-based Divi’s Laboratories, under Murali Divi’s leadership, reported a remarkable revenue of ₹88 billion in March 2022.

Murali Divi’s educational journey was a stepping stone to his extraordinary success.

He began with PUC in Machilipatnam and continued his pursuit of knowledge at MIT, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, where he earned his graduation degree.

His academic path led him to complete a Bachelor of Pharmacy course at the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
