India’s youngest Sarpanch

Jabna Chauhan became the youngest Sarpanch in India after being elected the Pradhan of Thajun, Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh at the age of 22.

Jabna who is a daughter of a farmer the Thajun village overcame poverty and reached the position.

Jabna has a sister and a visually-impaired brother.  Raised in a poor family, Jabna had a hard time in her childhood.

Her father could not afford to send her a good degree college after her Class 12.


Her uncle helped her college education. To meet her financial needs, she worked as a correspondent for a newspaper. While collecting news for the paper, she realized the problems of her village. She tried to focus on the problems to be reached to authorities and got resolved.

When her villagers asked her to file nominations in the Panchayat elections, she was not sure about her move. However, she realized it was a good opportunity to do something for the village.

She contested the elections and was elected as the Pradhan. Women in her village are facing problems due to alcoholism; hence, she wanted to stop the menace.

She urged the government officials to close liquor shops in her area and surrounding areas. She also passed a resolution in the Gram Sabha for banning the sale and consumption of liquor and tobacco products in 2017.

It was a tough time for her. Men who were addicted to alcohol would threaten her with verbal abuse. But, she did not stop her efforts.

Now, none of the people in her village drink in public places. She worked hard to repair roads and setup street lights. She even motivated villager on waste management effectively.

Her efforts are praised and she won district-level award of ‘Best Pradhan’. She also wants to help women earn extra income and empower them.
