Bare Necessities: A zero-waste startup making a big impact
India faces a growing waste crisis, and one startup is tackling it head-on. Bare Necessities, based in Bangalore, is leading the way with sustainable alternatives to everyday products.
Founded by Sahar Mansoor, the company is driven by a passion for environmental and social justice.
Sahar started her journey as an accidental entrepreneur. After witnessing India’s mounting garbage problem, she committed to a zero-waste lifestyle.
In just two and a half years, she produced only half a kilogram of trash. However, she noticed a gap; eco-friendly, chemical-free products were hard to find. So, she built a brand that solved this problem.
Bare Necessities offers personal care and home essentials packaged in recyclable, reusable, or biodegradable materials.
These products include reusable straws, bamboo toothbrushes, and more. The brand focuses on ethical sourcing from local farmers and vendors.
A standout feature is its all-women team. The company employs and trains local women in inventory management and English, empowering them both socially and economically. It’s not just a business, it’s a community movement.
The startup has sold thousands of products, replacing plastic alternatives and keeping them out of landfills.
It has also reached over 10,000 people through educational workshops and talks. These efforts create awareness and inspire people to reduce waste in their daily lives.
Running a purpose-driven business comes with challenges. Scaling production while staying true to zero-waste values is tough. Yet, Bare Necessities continues to grow while holding onto its mission.
Despite the hurdles, the impact is clear. Consumers benefit from healthier, chemical-free goods, while waste management systems get some relief. More importantly, Bare Necessities proves that sustainability and business success can go hand in hand.
Bare Necessities is not just about selling products. It’s about changing mindsets.
With continued effort and support, the startup aims to inspire more conscious choices, one zero-waste product at a time.
