LNG Train Debuts in Ahmedabad

India is taking another step toward cleaner and more efficient railway operations by exploring alternative fuels.

At Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Railway Station, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to flag off the country’s first LNG-powered dual-fuel train.

The project introduces LNG technology into the train’s Driving Power Cars (DPCs). Each DPC uses a 1,400-horsepower engine.

The modified system allows the same engine to operate on either LNG or diesel. Therefore, the technology offers greater flexibility during regular operations.

Meanwhile, the Railway authorities have completed more than 2,000 kilometres of field trials using both DPCs.

These trials examined the system’s performance, reliability and operational efficiency. The results will help assess its wider potential across the railway network.

The converted engines feature a 2,200-litre LNG tank. It can store around 950 to 1,000 kilograms of usable LNG.

Once filled, the train can cover up to 444 kilometres. However, the actual range will vary with operating conditions and fuel usage.

The Railways expects LNG adoption to reduce diesel consumption and operating expenses. It also aims to lower emissions, including carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter.

Based on trial data, annual fuel savings are estimated at around ₹23.9 lakh. However, actual savings will depend on fuel prices, operating patterns and LNG usage.

The launch is also linked to broader infrastructure development at Sabarmati. Shah is scheduled to inaugurate several development projects at the station. He will also open the WAG-12 maintenance shed, designed to support locomotive maintenance.

Separately, Shah highlighted the government’s focus on strengthening cooperatives and expanding women’s participation in the sector.

Speaking at Kundara, Kerala, he said the creation of the Cooperation Ministry addressed a long-standing demand from farmers and cooperative stakeholders.

Shah said the ministry seeks to strengthen rural development and agriculture while expanding women’s empowerment through cooperatives and greater participation in the sector.
