zPod – India’s first driverless car
Minus Zero, a Bengaluru-based start-up, has unveiled zPod. It is India’s first fully autonomous vehicle equipped with self-driving technology developed in-house by the company.
This innovative car can navigate specific geographical conditions and environments without human intervention, achieving level-five autonomy.
With its unique four-seater layout where the seats face each other and lack traditional controls, zPod relies on its camera suite and advanced AI system to process real-time image data and handle all driving tasks.
Minus Zero asserts that incorporating cameras instead of conventional sensors like LIDAR helps reduce costs significantly.
The driving force behind Minus Zero’s AI technology is the ambition to tackle traffic congestion and road fatalities.
The company’s COO highlights the staggering wastage of 2.5 lakh litres of fuel every hour, solely due to traffic in the city.
When accumulated, these inefficiencies lead to an astonishing $22 billion in losses for the nation annually.
The company leverages its True Vision Autonomy concept, which utilizes an array of six cameras acting as sensors. With this, Minus Zero aims to make autonomous driving technology applicable to any vehicle, whether internal combustion engine (ICE) or electric.
They even suggest retrofitting existing cars with an engine control module as a means of incorporating autonomous capabilities.
Initially, the usage of zPod will be confined to specific areas like tech parks and residential complexes, operating along predefined routes.
The company emphasizes the importance of geofencing, restricting the car’s movement to well-defined areas away from public roads.
This approach ensures controlled and safe deployment of the autonomous vehicle.
Although Minus Zero has no intention of mass-producing the zPod, they showcased it as an inspiring concept to encourage other manufacturers to explore new possibilities and push the boundaries of autonomous driving.
By addressing key challenges such as reducing hardware costs and data requirements, Minus Zero’s innovative approach paves the way for further advancements in autonomous vehicle technology.
Minus Zero’s zPod represents a significant milestone in India’s autonomous driving landscape.
While the zPod may not enter production, its introduction serves as an inspiration for other manufacturers to explore the uncharted territories of autonomous driving.
