Organization Helping People Manage Waste

Do you know that in India, sixty million tons of garbage is generated every year along with 45 million tons of untreated waste disposed in an unhygienic way? The waste management system in India is not exactly at gold standards. In order to tackle this problem, an organization called WVI is helping people.

WVI is run by a group of environmentally-conscious individuals. It offers solutions for housing societies and corporate offices. They help them recycle dry waste and composting organic waste. The organization offers two ways for waste management.

They come to the doorstep for collection of recyclable waste only or they also give complete waste solution which includes collection of dry as well as organic waste.

The organization has 25-members. It is currently working with 17,000 households in Hyderabad. So far, they claim to have prevented over 1,500 tons of waste from reaching landfills.

The way it works is that a housing society or a corporate organization signs a contract with WVI. After that, the residents are told about the system of two bin one bag technique. This system allows the organization to segregate the waste at source.

As a result, wet waste is collected in one bin, sanitary and biomedical waste in another, and dry waste in a bag. Every week, the organization conducts weekly doorstep pickups from their clients.

The organic waste is composted at a dedicated processing center the organization has. On the other hand, WVI has partnered with 35 certified recyclers in Hyderabad for dealing with dry waste.

Clients who register with the company pay a monthly service charge. The organization is also helping rag pickers who get to work in a more professional and hygienic environment. WVI targeted only bigger societies and corporate offices in the city so far. They are also planning to launch an app which lets users book a pickup from their doorsteps in the same day.
