Mumbai Teen develops Sili-Dry sacks for odour-free shoes
It is difficult to keep your shoes dry during the monsoons. Damp shoes or footwear not just create an uncomfortable situation to wearers, but release a foul odour.
To give footwear fresh-smell, a 16-year-old girl from Mumbai developed a product Sili-Dry. Aalya Vora, a student at Hill Spring International School, is a football player. She used to experience a problem with moist footwear and their foul odour during monsoons. Aalya could not make them dry after washing to eliminate the odour. If she did not wash them, she had trouble with the odour. In this context, she wants to find a solution and designed small sacks that filled with a drying agent.
She named them Sili-Dry. Sili-Dry helps prevent foul odours, dampness etc. when kept in shoes by absorbing moisture. These sacks are reusable. The logo changes colour once it is completely saturated. However, the sacks can be reused by following the instructions given with the product.
Sili-Dry can be used in products like blankets etc. They can prevent rusting in razors and damage to electronics.
Aalya also launched another product Odor-Go, a sack filled with an absorbent. It can be placed in refrigerators, bathrooms etc. The sack eliminates unpleasant odour and keeps them fresh when it is placed inside. Odor-Go can be used for up to two months. It is also reusable.
The cost of Sili-Dry is ₹100 and Odor-Go is ₹80. So far, she sold more than 1,000 pieces of Sili-Dry and 300 pieces of Odor-Go.
Aalya says thanks to the YEA! Programme for empowering students by providing an opportunity to create innovative products. This programme also helps pitch their idea to investors and improve further.
She participated in the programme which helped her designing brochures, business cards etc. to sell directly to the end-users.
It also helped her get the first order and improve her sales through word-of-mouth publicity. Since then, she has been getting orders from many people. She wants to expand her sales using an e-commerce platform in future.
