Digital Labour Chowk, the innovation giving dignity to daily wagers

In a world where technology connects job seekers to opportunities at the tap of a screen, daily wage labourers, the backbone of India’s construction sector, have long stood in the shadows, waiting for work under trees and bus stops.

But one young man from Bihar, Chandrashekhar Mandal, decided to change that.

Digital Labour Chowk is an online job-matching platform built specifically for blue-collar workers like masons, carpenters, painters, and electricians. Think of it as LinkedIn for daily wage labourers.

Here, contractors post job listings, and workers can view details such as location, wage, duration, and whether accommodation or food is provided.

Importantly, workers can directly contact employers, eliminating middlemen, uncertainty, and daily physical waiting.

For the first time, these workers have access to:

  • Verified job postings
  • Fair wages
  • Job continuity
  • Digital identity cards
  • Skill recognition and incentives
  • Future upskilling opportunities

Chandrashekhar’s startup also plans to offer performance-based incentives and digital labour cards, giving workers a trackable professional identity.

Before Digital Labour Chowk, workers from many areas had no choice but to migrate, often facing harsh working and living conditions.

During the pandemic, most of these walked days to return home from areas like Mumbai.

Now, thanks to this platform, many can find jobs closer to home and stay with their family.

The app helped many people earn three times more than before, working under fair contracts without the daily stress of job hunting.

For contractors, it solves a critical pain point: quickly finding reliable, skilled labour.

Just a few clicks, and the manpower arrives, aligned with the company’s needs.

What Makes It Revolutionary?

  • Brings dignity to informal labour
  • Reduces unnecessary migration
  • Builds transparency and trust
  • Digitises and organises a sector long ignored
  • Empowers through identity and access

From handing out cold Roohafza at chowks to explain his app, to partnering with builders and RERA, Chandrashekhar’s grassroots approach made workers see this as their platform.

With over one lakh workers already impacted, and 500 to 1,000 jobs posted daily, Digital Labour Chowk is more than a startup; it’s a movement to give visibility, stability, and dignity to India’s invisible workforce.
