Thiruparkadal Temple: A sacred symbol of unity & divine grace

Temples often preserve not only faith but also timeless spiritual values.

The Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple at Thiruparkadal in Tamil Nadu stands as a remarkable example, offering a rare message of harmony between Shaivism and Vaishnavism while holding immense religious significance.

Ancient scriptures identify Thiruparkadal, once known as Karapuram, as a sacred land associated with Lord Vishnu’s divine act of protecting Lord Brahma’s yajna.

According to tradition, Vishnu reclined on Adishesha to stop the overflowing Vegavathi River from disrupting the sacred ritual.

This episode links Thiruparkadal with Pallikonda and Tiruvekka in Kanchipuram, making the village an important Vaishnavite pilgrimage centre.

The temple’s greatest distinction lies in its unique presiding deity. Lord Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal stands upon a Shiva Lingam with his hand raised in Abhaya Mudra, symbolising protection and reassurance.

This rare form represents the philosophical truth that Hari and Hara are one. The legend behind this form centres on the Vaishnavite sage Pundareega Maharishi, who expected to worship Lord Vishnu but instead found a Shiva Lingam.

Lord Vishnu later appeared before him in this extraordinary form, dispelling sectarian differences and reinforcing the unity of the two traditions.

Another significant aspect of the temple is its association with the 107th Divya Desam. While 106 Divya Desams exist on earth, the 107th Thiruparkadal and the 108th Paramapadam are believed to be celestial abodes of Lord Vishnu.

Devotees believe that worshipping at the adjacent Sri Ranganathar Temple symbolically grants the blessings of visiting the divine Thiruparkadal itself.

The temple also reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Vijayanagara Empire. Emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya patronised the shrine, and his idol remains within the temple as a mark of his devotion.

Intricate carvings, sacred tanks, and shrines dedicated to Alwars and other deities further enrich its spiritual atmosphere.

Every year, thousands of devotees gather here during Vaikunta Ekadasi, commemorating the day Lord Vishnu blessed Pundareega Maharishi.

Thus, the Thiruparkadal Temple continues to inspire pilgrims with its message of religious harmony, divine compassion, and the eternal unity of Shiva and Vishnu.
