PM Modi launches Atal Bhujal Yojana | Fusion - WeRIndia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off Atal Bhujal Yojana yesterday on the 95th birth anniversary of late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Atal Bhujal Yojana is a scheme aimed to improve groundwater management with the participation of the community.

The Union Cabinet had approved Atal Bhujal Yojana (ATAL JAL) on December 24 with a budget of ₹6000 crores, out of which half of the fund, ₹3,000 crores will be provided by the World Bank and the remaining half will be funded by the Centre.

This amount would be spent on the project in the next five years.

The priority regions under this program are in seven states. These states are Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

The program is expected to benefit around 8,350 Gram Panchayats in 78 districts in these states.

After launching the program, PM Modi said that Atal Bhujal Yojana helps the country handle the water crisis. It improves groundwater management.

There are 18 crore rural households, but only three crore households have clean pipe water.

The government aims to provide piped water to the remaining households by 2024.

PM urged farmers to switch over to crops that use less water to save water as households need it for their daily needs.

He said that the government had taken several steps to conserve water. Every village also has to make a water plan and create a water fund to get more funds under this program.

Atal Bhujal Yojana would also focus on the sustainability of groundwater.

Water conservation is one of the most vital things now as this precious natural resource is depleting. Hence, every citizen should have to take essential steps for water management.
