India launches its first Rotavirus vaccine at $1
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India’s first indigenously developed rotavirus vaccine “Rotavac” on Monday, March 9in New Delhi. This is the cheapest vaccine in the world.
Rotavirus is one amongst the foremost common common causes of diarrhea which causes over 1million hospitalisations and kills nearly 80,000 youngsters beneath the age of 5 per annum.
The vaccine is anticipated to bring down the massive range of child deaths caused by the rotavirus symptom in Asian countries and across the world.
The innovative public-private collaboration used the work of three hundred scientists and a partnership between the Ministry of Science and Technology, establishments of the U.S. government and numerous Indian government establishments and NGOs. The initiative has been supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
“Vaccines work to save and protect children from diseases like rotavirus for a lifetime,” said Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in a press statement released in 2013. “This public-private partnership is an exemplary model of how to develop affordable technologies that save lives.”
Bharat Biotech has also played an important role in the development of vaccine. It has spent around Rs. 500 crore on it. Rs. 400 crore was spent on product development and Rs. 100 crore on manufacturing.
