Census shows Hindu population percentage below 80%

Comparing the census 2001 and census 2011 results, it was found that the percentage of Muslims in the country increased by 0.8 percentage points between 2001 and 2011. It increased to 14.23 percentage which equates to 17.22 crore.

The 2011 census data released by Registrar General of India on Tuesday showed that the percentage of Hindus has reduced by 0.8 percentage points between 2001 and 2011. For the first time, the Hindu population percentage has went below 80 percentage. The share of population for Hindus is now 79.8 percent in the country.

In the previous decade, there was a sharp fall of 1.94 percentage point in the proportion of Hindus in the population.

The data from 2011 census showed that the population of India grew by 17.7% between 2001 and 2011. It reached 121.09 crore. The number of Hindus is 96.63 crore. The decadal growth for Hindus in this period was 16.8 percent.


In the last couple of years, the UPA government did not release census data based on religious composition for various political reasons.

The data showed that Christians form 2.3 percent of the total population numbering at 2.78 crore individuals. The Sikh population was at 2.08 crore with 1.7%, Buddhist population was at 84 lakh with 0.7%, and 45 lakh Jains with 0.4% of the total population.
