Tamil Nadu government announces free data to students

Now students across the country are attending online classes. The COVID pandemic forced many students to stay at home and learn from home. As a result, several lakhs of students across the country are learning online.

Though some of them can afford the infrastructure like computers or mobile phones, internet etc., a majority of them cannot acquire.

Hence, many state governments are providing study material through TVs. In addition to that, some states offer special programmes for students. The Tamil Nadu government has announced free data scheme for around 10 lakh school and college students across the state.

Chief Minister K Palaniswami said that the government decided to provide free 2GB internet data per day for all students enrolled in government schools and colleges. The free data scheme applies to students enrolled in government-aided colleges and scholarship-funded private institutions also.


The free 2GB data will be provided for four months from January to April. The state government provides free data cards to students free of cost through the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT). The scheme will also benefit the students in self-financed institutions. Besides, the state government also provides free laptops to the government and aided college students.

The CM in this context said that this initiative would benefit the students to attend online classes without any hindrance.

The central government earlier allowed to reopen the schools across the country, leaving the final decision to state governments.

Though many state governments allowed the schools to reopen, a significant number of parents are not willing to send their children to schools. As a result, still many schools are conducting online classes.

Meanwhile, CBSE released the schedule for class 10 and 12 board exams. At the same time, the Tamil Nadu government also said that the state board exams for class 10 and 12 students would be conducted.
