States that extended lockdown beyond April 14

Several states urged the Centre to extend the lockdown in the country beyond April 14 to bring down the coronavirus cases.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with the chief ministers of various states. In that meeting, many chief ministers requested to extend the lockdown for two more weeks. It was almost confirmed, but the central government has not announced the extension.

Meanwhile, several state governments announced the extension of lockdown beyond April 14.

Here is a list of the states that announced the extension of lockdown:


Odisha is the first state to extend the lockdown till April 30. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that it was difficult to decide between the protection of lives of people and the economic activity. Yet, the government preferred the lives of the people.

Punjab is the second state to extend the lockdown till May 1. Captain Amarinder Singh said the decision was taken to prevent the spread of coronavirus further as crowds are seen in mandis after harvesting.

Maharashtra extended the lockdown till April 30. It reported the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that the lockdown would become stricter with some relaxations in only some areas. He added that the decision on lifting the lockdown would be taken only after April 30 based on the prevailing situation.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao announced the extension of lockdown till April 30. He said that the government would consider lifting the lockdown in phases after that.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee decided to extend the of lockdown till April 30. She requested the central government to keep strict monitoring in the border areas.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged for an extension of the lockdown. Others like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and Puducherry also favoured for lockdown but want relaxations in a graded manner.
