Indian Government released a stamp on November 4 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of first successful liver transplant. In 1998, Indian doctors at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi were succeeded in transplanting liver. They achieved success in both pediatric and adult liver transplant.

Sanjay Kandaswamy was the first child in India to receive a successful liver transplant in 1998. He is a two-year-old boy then and his father was the donor. Now he is studying Class XI in Palayaseevaram, Kancheepuram. The success of his story remained crucial in performing more successful liver transplants in India. The courage shown by his family is appreciated in this regard.

The success also led to several innovations to this field. More than 900 liver transplants are performed in India each year. Usage of human organs for transplantations has been constantly rising since the 90s. Liver translation is one of the most advanced surgeries and is being performed in many hospitals in India. The first successful liver transplant encouraged the doctors by improving confidence in them. It eliminated the fears of recipients and donors as well. Now India has emerged as one of the global healthcare destinations. With its constant effort to innovations in this field, India is ahead of its rivals in delivering healthcare services.
