SC refuses to interfere with Centre’s decision on Kashmir

The Supreme Court refused to interfere with the Centre’s decision on imposing restrictions Jammu and Kashmir.

The Apex Court on Tuesday said that as the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is very sensitive, the government should be given some time to deal with it and bring the situation to normalcy.

While hearing the plea filed by Anuradha Bhasin, the editor of Kashmir Times, the court said that though the situation needs to be brought to normalcy, it should not be at the cost of the lives of people. The citizens should be able to rely on the government.

The bench also heard the petition filed by political activist Tehseen Poonawalla that sought to lift the restrictions in Kashmir Valley.

It also sought for directions of the court to reopen schools and hospitals and allow police stations to function normally. The petitioner argued against blocking communication in Jammu and Kashmir.

But, the court felt that the government needs time to lift restrictions. Solicitor General Tushar Chawala in this context reminded about the events of 2016 following the encounter of terrorist Burhan Wani.

At that time, many casualties were reported in the state, but this time no casualty has been reported.

He also described the measures taken to prevent escalation of tension.

He assured to lift the restrictions soon.

Initially, the petition was filed for the first time on August 8 which was refused by the court for such an early hearing.

The petition wanted directions to release political leaders who were kept under house arrest and unblock internet services.

But, the court said that it would not interfere now and the matter would be heard again after two weeks.
