SC to hear Ayodhya plea today | Fusion - WeRIndia

The Supreme Court is going to hear the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute case today.

A notification was issued on the court’s website yesterday saying that the bench is headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and judges S.A. Bobde, D.Y. Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan, and Abdul Nazeer would hear the case.

In 2010, the Allahabad high court gave the judgement on the disputed site in Ayodhya. As per that, the 22.7-acre land should be equally partitioned among the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.

Fourteen appeals have been filed in the Supreme Court against this judgment.

Earlier on March 6, the Apex Court had reserved its order on whether the case should be referred for mediation.

It said that the severity of the case and its consequences on the country’s politics have been understood.

The bench while hearing on the appeals on February 26 suggested for mediation saying that it was looking at “a possibility of healing relationships” and could be decided only on that.

The preferred names of the mediators had to be submitted to the court by the parties as per the court orders by March 6.

The Hindu bodies except Nirmohi Akhara had opposed the suggestions for mediation whereas the Muslim petitioners had welcomed it.

The Nirmohi Akhara had filed an application in the Supreme Court earlier in the month of April against the plea that sought the return of 67.390 acres of undisputed acquired land to original owners.

The mediation panel had spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and senior advocate Sriram Panchu. Before establishing the panel, the supreme court said it noted “the lack of consensus between the parties in the matter”.

And the panel was directed to finish the proceeding within eight weeks.
