PM Modi hosts India’s Glasgow CWG medallists

New Delhi witnessed a proud sporting celebration as Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medallists at his residence.

He congratulated the athletes for their impressive Glasgow performances and shared a warm, informal interaction, celebrating their achievements and the spirit of Indian sport.

The meeting also featured a Reel on PM Modi’s Instagram account. In the video, gold medal-winning boxer Sakshi Chaudhary held a selfie stick and spoke about meeting the Prime Minister.

She described him as humble before inviting him to say a few words.

PM Modi responded with an encouraging sporting message, urging the athletes to keep playing, keep thriving and continue cheering for Bharat with pride and patriotism.

India finished fourth in the overall medal standings at Glasgow, collecting 39 medals. The tally included 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze medals.

Despite a smaller sporting programme at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Indian athletes produced strong performances across disciplines.

Boxing proved to be India’s standout sport. The pugilists contributed 10 medals, including an impressive seven golds.

Athletes from several other disciplines also added to India’s overall haul, helping the country secure a place among the top four nations.

However, the 39-medal tally was lower than India’s 61 medals at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The difference was largely influenced by the absence of several sports that had previously provided India with significant medal opportunities.

Australia topped the Glasgow standings, followed by England and Canada, while India secured fourth place.

The Glasgow campaign now gives Indian athletes another boost ahead of their next major assignment.

The focus will soon shift to the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, which are scheduled to begin on September 29.

For India’s medallists, the reception at the Prime Minister’s residence offered a fitting celebration of their achievements before the next sporting challenge begins.
