PM launches e-RUPI, digital payment solution
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched e-RUPI, a digital payment solution for users.
e-RUPI is an electronic voucher-based system meant for making digital payments. This cashless and contactless instrument is a one-time payment mechanism.
It is a prepaid voucher that can be delivered to the mobile phone of users through a QR code or SMS string.
Users can redeem the voucher directly with the service provider. There is no need of a card, internet banking access or digital payment app to use it. thus, e-RUPI eases the payment process.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) developed e-RUPI in association with the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the National Health Authority.
This digital payment solution helps improve digital transactions and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) as it is person-centric. At present, the government is using the DBT to 300 schemes for the benefit of people. These include LPG, ration, pension schemes and many more.
e-RUPI will improve transparency for such financial transactions. It provides targeted delivery of funds. If the money is sent for fertilizers by the government, it can be used for that purpose only. It can be used by corporate entities for their employees and other persons as well.
For instance, if anyone wants to offer money for the vaccination of 100 people, they can give e-RUPI voucher to them without paying cash. The vouchers are used for vaccination purpose only. Thus e-RUPI enhances transparency.
After launching the digital payment solution, PM Modi said it would be given to health beneficiaries in the beginning. It is also used for services providing medicines and nutritional support to children and mothers under various welfare schemes, drugs and diagnostics under schemes like Ayushman Bharat Yojana etc.
PM added that many other facilities would be added to it later to cover many areas like food.
