PM interacts with CMs on the vaccination drive

As the world’s largest vaccination drive will begin soon in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday interacted with the Chief Ministers of all states through video conferencing. PM also reviewed COVID-19 situation across different states in this meeting.

PM Modi after the meeting said that quick decisions were taken in the country to control the spread of COVID-19. Hence, the situation is under control and it is better than many other countries.

Before this meeting, PM had interacted with the CMs several times on the vaccination drive.

The DCGI approved two vaccines and PM had discussed with the CMs on it and reviewed the preparedness for the vaccination. While Serum Institute’s Covishield got approval for initial use, Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin has been approved for emergency and restricted use.

The Health Ministry earlier announced that the vaccination drive would begin from January 16.

Frontline workers will be given priority in the initial phase of COVID vaccine. They are around three crores. The central government will bear the cost of vaccination for frontline workers.

In the second phase, i.e. after the completion of vaccination for frontline workers, people above 50 years and below 50 years with comorbidities will get the vaccine. These are estimated around 27 crores. As of now, it was not revealed who would bear the cost of the vaccine for these people. Though some state governments announced free vaccine for their citizens, most of them did not mention anything on it. Hence, it is not yet known.

Meanwhile, the transportation of Covishield vaccine from the facility of Serum Institute is expected to begin from January 12. The company said that it is planning for logistics to transport the vaccine and police security for it.
