New broadcasting rules won’t affect TV services: TRAI

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued new broadcasting rules to cable service providers.

Several customers and service providers are under the view that these might affect the tariff and services. But, yesterday TRAI clarified that the rules will not affect the TV services in the due course of migration to a new plan.

The new rules will come into force from December 29. The new rules enable the customers to select and pay for the channels they wish to watch.

The TV broadcasters will have to disclose the maximum retail price of each channel as well as collective package.

As the messages on blacking-out of the existing channels are rounding in the media, the TRAI clarified that no existing services will be affected by the new rules. The Authority advised the service providers and broadcasters to make sure that no channel will be discontinued on December 29.

The TRAI says that considering the interest of customers, it prepared a detailed Migration Plan. The plan would provide sufficient opportunity for all subscribers to make an informed choice.

It also allows the service providers to carry out different activities in the specific framework and timeline.

The TRAI also says that it has ensured the similar cost to subscribers so that it would not increase. It adds that if the subscribers carefully choose the required channels, then the cost may even be less than what they are paying at present per month.

The Authority caps the upper ceiling as ₹130 for 100 channels under a network capacity fee. These channels are Free to Air channels.

The customers will have to pay additional or applicable MRP for pay channels.

As per the TRAI, it is not a burden as each slab of 25 channels will be available at a maximum price of ₹20 per slab.
