Mirabai Chanu gets Weightlifting Gold - Fusion - WeRindia

Going into the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, people had high hopes for Indian female weightlifter Mirabai Chanu.

In the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, she had won the silver medal.

Her personal best was a total lift of 194 kg, which she earned in the World Championships a few months ago.

This was over 10 kg more than the personal best of her closest rival. Now, Chanu has won the gold medal in the women’s 48kg event.

Not only did she win the gold medal for India in the women’s 48 kg, but she also broke several records in doing it.

Chanu broke the Commonwealth and the Games record in snatch. She pulled off clean lifts in all three of her attempts, which were 80 kg, 84 kg, and 86 kg respectively.

Chanu lifted over double her body weight in her three successful attempts to claim the clean and jerk. Her three attempts were 103 kg, 107 kg, and 110 kg respectively.

Chanu also claimed the overall Games record with these attempts. She ended with a total final score of 196 kg.

Chanu’s record-breaking performance earned massive applause from the crowd of fans at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Center.

The performance also earned her the gold medal for the women’s 48kg event.

Chanu’s nearest rival, Canadian weightlifter Amanda Braddock, did not complete a single lift in the clean and jerk. She managed a best of 76 kg in snatch.

Chanu was not the only one to earn a medal for India in weightlifting that day.

Earlier in the day, P. Gururaja also earned a silver medal in the men’s 56kg event, claiming the first medal for India in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

All Indians are very proud of these weightlifters, who have pulled off splendid performances in their events and have brought pride to their country.
