Jammu and Kashmir Floods -The Worst Calamity in a Century
With the deaths of 200 on Tuesday, Jammu and Kashmir floods is considered the worst calamity in a century by the CM. Nearly 43,000 people have been evacuated safely by various agencies. Yet, nearly four lakh people were still stranded in flood-ravaged Kashmir Valley even though one lakh troops engaged in the rescue operations.
61 IAF choppers and transport aircrafts undertook 354 sorties non-stop overnight to rescue people and supply them with relief material to submerged parts of the Valley. The water level in Dal Lake was also steadily rising. Though the water levels have slightly reduced in South Kashmir, it has been increasing in the northern side. Massive rescue operations are being performed by the Indian Armed Forces, IAS and NDRF by more helicopters and rescue materials including boats.
