Indian Railways issues guidelines for women safety

To prevent crimes against women in trains and railway premises, Indian Railways issued guidelines with preventive measures, action plan etc.

As per sources, women passengers contribute to 20 per cent of daily travellers in the Railways.

In this scenario, railways wants to assure their safety. Hence, it issued guidelines to all Zonal Railways and Production Units. These guidelines are aimed to control crimes against women and improve their safety and security during the journey.

Here is a list of guidelines issued by Indian Railways:


  • Proper lighting arrangements will be made throughout railway stations including, parking, platforms, yards, waiting rooms etc.
  • Railways decided to close all unauthorized entries and exits at stations.
  • Abandoned buildings and isolated quarters shall be demolished. They shall be guarded from time to time, especially when the movement of people is minimal, by the duty staff till they are demolished.
  • To avoid crime and concealment due to the growth of unwanted vegetation, railway stations and premises shall be kept clean.
  • To check the entry of unauthorized persons to the waiting rooms, especially at odd hours, the duty officer shall visit and cross-check the details of people.
  • There shall be an entry system in yards and coaching depots to avoid the entry of unauthorized people.
  • The surveillance system shall be maintained in yards and coaching depots.
  • If any unauthorized people are found across the railway premises, they shall be prosecuted.
  • Railways will conduct special drives to control alcohol consumption in trains and railway stations. Those who found guilty shall be prosecuted.
  • Railways offers free internet services to passengers. Railways asks the service provides that porn sites shall not be accessible through this to avoid crimes.
  • If railway staff are found guilty of crimes against women, railways will take exemplary action against them.
  • Cases shall be followed up continuously till their end.
