India-Kyrgyztan make agreements

For the sake of peace and forming a secure neighbourhood protected from threats of acts of terrorism and extremism, India and kyrgyzstan yesterday signed four agreements. The agreements are based on bolstering defence cooperation and holding annual joint military exercises.

As part of eight-day-six-nation tour of Central Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived there. He put focus on the important need to combat terrorism and extremism which he represented as a threat without borders.

Modi has stated that both India and Kyrgyztan seek a peaceful and secure neighbourhood at a time of challenges in our region. He added that both countries shared interest in combating extremism and terrorism that has become a threat without boundary lines. He made these statements after talking with President Almazbek Atambayev.

The 2 countries signed four key agreements which include cooperation in defence and culture fields. As part of these agreements, two MoU were conjointly signed for cooperation between the Election Commissions of the two countries and on cooperation within the sphere of Standards, a move which will facilitate economic relations.


The purpose of signing the defence agreement is to make deeper bilateral cooperation in defence, security, military education and training. It conjointly envisages conduct of joint military exercises, exchange of experience and information, and exchange of military observers and instructors etc.
