IIT entrance exam to be online from 2018

So far, the entrance exam for the Indian Institutes of Technology is being conducted in pen and paper mode.

But from next year onwards i.e. from 2018, the entrance exam will be conducted online.

The Joint Admission Board met on Sunday in Chennai and decided that the IIT entrance will be completely online in order to make the logistics easier. It is also expected that the evaluations will also be easy without any problems.

Certain examination centers are designed to conduct the entrance exam online and students can answer the questions on a computer.

The JAB is the policy-making body on IIT admissions. The Board took the decision in a meeting two days ago.

Earlier, HRD Ministry introduced that students can opt for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains online.

It is a qualifying exam for JEE-Advanced. Those who qualify both the exams can get admissions into the IITs and NITs.

Even though, the concept of introducing a complete online exam for IIT entrance was discussed for many years, it is not implemented due to lack of adequate infrastructure as per a member of the Board.

This year over 13 lakh students appeared for the JEE-Mains out of which not more than 10 per cent choose online mode.

Only 2.2 lakh students were eligible to appear for the JEE (Advanced) examination.

More than 13 lakh students took the JEE-Mains this year, with less than 10 per cent of them going online. Around 2.2 lakh students were eligible to write the JEE (Advanced).

This year’s JEE pattern had two main changes which were notified in the beginning of the year by the Ministry of HRD. As per those notifications, marks of class 12 shall have no weight while calculating the ranks in the JEE (Main) exam.

And another change is that the students should secure at least 75 per cent marks in the 12th class examination to qualify for the admission in the IITs or NITs. Or they shall be in the top 20 percentile of the respective board exams.
