Bangalore station first to go WiFi
High five with WiFi! The youth in Bangalore city station is busy pressing the buttons of its mobile phones, as the railway station is the first in the country to install a WiFi facility in order to offer high speed internet to passengers.
WiFi is being offered to passengers on mobile phones free of charge for half an hour. After that, the user can buy scratch cards offered at the WiFi Help Desk. According to a senior railway official, the scratch cards are priced at Rs 25 for 30 minutes and Rs 35 for one hour and are accessible throughout the day. With credit or debit cards, a user can also buy additional browsing time online.
The distribution of the Internet bandwidth is done through WiFi. RailWire is a retail Broadband distribution model of RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. It is a public sector unit of the Railway Ministry, and is involved in distributing the internet bandwidth through WiFi.
Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda had inaugurated the special service at the railway station currently. The Railways have mandated RailTel to offer the WiFi facility at most of the main stations, the official said.
