AI boost for driving license renewal: What’s changing

India is taking another step toward smarter governance with a new AI-powered system for driving license renewal.

The Transport Department has introduced facial verification under its faceless services to improve both security and transparency.

Under this updated process, applicants renewing their license after 15 years must complete AI-based face authentication.

The system matches the applicant’s live image with the photo on their existing license. As a result, authorities can confirm that the same individual is applying for renewal.

This initiative, launched in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre, aims to curb fraud and identity misuse.

The pilot project will begin at the Bhopal Regional Transport Office. Officials believe this move will significantly reduce cases of duplicate or fake licenses.

The decision also comes in response to rising cyber fraud concerns. With millions of licenses already issued and numbers growing each year, manual verification is becoming increasingly difficult.

Therefore, AI technology offers a faster and more reliable alternative for identity checks.

Moreover, the system enhances administrative efficiency. It minimises human errors and ensures better record management. At the same time, it strengthens trust in digital public services.

The renewal process itself remains simple and online. Applicants need to visit the Parivahan Portal and select “Driving License Related Services.”

Then, choose the respective state and click on “Apply for DL Renewal.” After entering details like license number and date of birth, upload required documents such as Form-9, medical certificate (if applicable), and the old license.

After paying the renewal fee online, schedule an appointment at the RTO for verification.

Once the verification process is completed, your driving license renewal application proceeds smoothly without further complications.

This AI-based system marks a significant upgrade in how driving licenses are renewed. It not only simplifies procedures but also ensures that the system remains secure, efficient, and future-ready.
