Demat Account: How to Open One and What You Need
As interest in stock market investing grows, a Demat Account has become an essential starting point for many investors.
It allows securities to be held electronically, making transactions and record-keeping simpler.
A Demat, or dematerialised, account can hold shares, bonds, government securities, mutual fund units, ETFs and securities received through IPOs.
Since investments are stored electronically, investors do not need to maintain physical share certificates.
A Demat Account is opened through a Depository Participant (DP). The DP acts as an intermediary between investors and depositories such as NSDL and CDSL.
After completing the required verification, eligible physical securities can be converted into electronic form.
Investors can then buy or sell securities through their linked trading account. Once a transaction is completed, the relevant securities are credited to or debited from the Demat Account.
Steps to Open a Demat Account Online
- Choose a DP: Banks, stockbrokers and financial institutions may offer Demat services.
- Submit an application: Complete the application and provide the required information.
- Provide documents: These generally include PAN, identity and address proof, bank details and a cancelled cheque.
- Complete verification: Once the submitted details are validated, the account can be activated.
Some financial institutions also provide paperless account-opening facilities. However, available services, pricing and features can vary between providers.
Common Demat Account Charges
Costs depend on the provider and account type. They may include account-opening fees, annual maintenance charges, transaction fees, depository charges, custodian fees and brokerage.
For example, account-opening fees may range from ₹200 to ₹500, while annual maintenance charges can range from ₹200 to ₹500.
Transaction and brokerage charges also vary. Investors should check the current fee schedule before opening an account.
Documents Usually Required
Applicants may need PAN, identity proof, address proof, bank details, a cancelled cheque, photographs and signature proof. PAN is generally mandatory for opening a Demat Account.
What Should Investors Check?
Before selecting a DP, compare brokerage and other charges. Also examine the trading platform, customer support, security measures and reputation.
Furthermore, check the provider’s research tools and overall financial stability.
A clear understanding of fees, services and account features can help investors choose an account that suits their requirements.
