IIT Madras launches free online courses in sports science
In a groundbreaking initiative, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has unveiled seven new online courses focused on Sports Science, available at no cost.
The courses, designed to bridge the gap between theory and practical applications, cater specifically to the unique body structure and cultural aspects of India and South Asia.
Starting on February 19, 2023, the courses aim to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the rapidly expanding field of competitive sports in India.
Interested individuals can apply for these courses on the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) website.
Initiated in 2003 by seven Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, NPTEL aims to enhance learning through technology.
According to Prof Andrew Thangaraj, coordinator at NPTEL, IIT Madras, these courses mark a pivotal moment by catering to India-centric sports needs, offering a well-rounded approach to sports science.
The eligibility criteria for these courses include a Class 12 passing certificate.
They are particularly relevant for students pursuing Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Sports Sciences, Physiotherapy, and related areas. Upon completion, students can further pursue Diplomas or Postgraduate degrees in these domains.
These courses are accessible to everyone, from enthusiasts to sports professionals. The comprehensive curriculum covers crucial sports topics such as biomechanics, injury prevention, strength training for Indians etc.
These courses are not limited to theoretical knowledge; they offer a practical understanding of how to enhance sports performance, monitor diet and training frequencies etc.
To receive a domain certification in Sports Science, learners must complete five core courses and two elective courses.
While the courses are delivered online through the SWAYAM portal, the final exams will be in-person, centre-based, and proctored, with a nominal fee of ₹1,000 per course.
The target audience includes coaches, athletes, trainers, physiotherapists, nutritionists, and anyone keen on delving into the multifaceted world of sports science.
As IIT Madras takes a pioneering step in democratizing sports education, these online courses are poised to equip a diverse range of learners with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the dynamic field of sports science.
