106-year-old woman bags three gold medals in National Open Athletics

Age proved to be no barrier for 106-year-old Rambai as she defied all odds and won three gold medals in the 18th National Open Athletics Championship held in Dehradun.

Rambai’s remarkable achievements include victories in the 100m sprint, 200m sprint, and shot-put events.

This incredible centenarian took up athletics at the age of 104 and even set a world record for the 100m sprint in the above-85 category last year.

Despite competing against a small pool of three to five contestants in her age group, Rambai emerged as the undisputed champion in all three events.

Rambai’s spirit and determination are truly inspiring. Born in the small village of Kadma in Charkhi Dadri, she spent most of her life performing household chores and working on the family farm.

However, her interest in athletics was sparked when she learned about Man Kaur, a 100-year-old athlete from Punjab who made headlines by winning gold and setting records in sprinting events.

Encouraged by her 41-year-old granddaughter, Sharmila Sagwan, Rambai decided to pursue athletics.

With a little professional practice, she managed to break Man Kaur’s world record by completing the 100m sprint in an impressive 45.50 seconds at the Open Masters Athletics Championships in Vadodara in June last year.

Rambai’s achievements didn’t stop there. Over the past two years, she has participated in 14 sporting events and amassed over 200 medals.

Her unwavering determination and zest for life continue to inspire people of all ages.

During the recent awards ceremony, Rambai proudly walked off the podium, expressing her happiness in her native Haryanvi language.

She even dismissed her granddaughter’s offer of a leg massage, insisting that it be given to someone who truly needed it.

Rambai’s incredible journey proves that age should never be a limitation when it comes to pursuing one’s dreams and achieving greatness. Her story serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the power of perseverance.

Rambai’s extraordinary accomplishments in athletics at the age of 106 are a testament to her remarkable spirit and determination.

She has shattered records, defied expectations, and inspired countless individuals with her passion and resilience.

Rambai’s story serves as a powerful reminder that age is merely a number and that it’s never too late to pursue one’s dreams.
