Sania Mirza wins women’s doubles grand slam trophy
A new history has been created by Sania Mirza as she became the first female player from India to win a women’s doubles grand slam trophy. She won this trophy along with the Wimbledon title together with Swiss partner Martina Hingis in London.
28-year-old Sania laid hands on her 1st women’s doubles Major title twelve years after turning professional. She and Hingis fought a victorious battle past second seed Russian team of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 5-7 7-6(4) 7-5 in a very thrilling final.
It is a noteworthy coincidence, that Sania had won women’s doubles junior Wimbledon championship in the same court back in 2003 along with Russian partner Alisa Kleybanova.
In 2011, Sania had come close to winning a women’s doubles Major. At that time she reached the French Open final with Elena Vesnina but ended up runners-up. Already have a protracted list of firsts. Sania along with player Mahesh Bhupati became the 1st woman player of India to win a grand slam, in 2009, when she won the Australian Open.
The winning of French Open (2012 with Bhupathi) and US Open (2014 with Bruno Soares) was added to her mixed doubles assortment. For the top seeds, it was a motivating turnaround. This is because they were at a 2-5 in the deciding set but made a shocking comeback to reel off 5 straight games to clinch the issue.
