World Mental Health Day 2022
Mental health is vital for the overall well-being of a person. It was ignored in the past. But, now, realizing its importance, many people are taking steps to prevent mental health problems.
In this context, it is apt to know about World Mental Health Day. It is observed on October 10 every year.
It is worrisome that mental health problems are rising year by year. At the same time, the pandemic triggered them furthermore.
Depression and anxiety are the most prevalent mental health conditions across the globe that cause a loss of around 12 billion working days each year. According to World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19 increased anxiety and depression by 25 per cent.
World Mental Health Day was first observed in 1992, aiming to educate people on mental health issues. There was no theme for the campaign in the beginning. The day was celebrated with a specific theme in 1994 for the first time. Its popularity continued to grow.
Since then, World Mental Health Day has been observed with a theme. This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day is “Make mental health and well-being for all a global priority”.
Health experts warn people to be vigilant about specific signs and symptoms. If you experience the following symptoms for two weeks or more, consult a psychologist immediately.
They include severe anxiety, sleep disturbances, extreme anger outbursts, helplessness or worthlessness, and intolerance to loud noises.
Here are some tips to improve your mental health:
- A well-balanced diet with all essential vitamins and minerals helps promote mental health. Nowadays, many people have vitamin D deficiency due to their lifestyle. So, include vitamin D-enriched foods.
- Regular exercise keeps you healthy. It improves immunity, refreshes your body and boosts mood. It also helps improve brain function.
- Sound sleep is vital for all your bodily functions. Hence, make sure you have enough sleep.
- Meditation, yoga, and other brain exercises also help relieve anxiety.
- Spend some time with your family members and friends. Also, share your feelings, predominantly negative feelings, with your beloved to lead a tension-free life.
