Tooter – The Indian version of Twitter
Twitter is one of the most commonly used social media in India. The microblogging site has many Indian celebrities and users. However, now, there is an Indian version of the platform made with Indians in mind.
As the trend of ‘Make in India’ is rising, Tooter came into the picture being advertised as a swadeshi social network. The platform became active in June-July. However, now it is picking up massive traction.
The platform claims to be all about free speech protected by many countries’ constitutions. They want to let everyone speak their minds.
Tooter functions are similar to Twitter. A person can create an account using their email and have a @ handle. They can read the feed of posts from other accounts.
There is a Tooter web application and an app for Android. However, it is not yet available in the Apple store.
As Twitter has tweets, Tooter has toots. To fit in with the Indian theme, the logo of the app is not a bluebird but rather a blue conch shell. The letters are written in English styled like Hindi.
As for the main purpose of the app, their about section says that they felt the need for a swadeshi social media platform that is independent of the American company Twitter.
There are already many prominent figures on Tooter including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Kiran Bedi, Smriti Irani, Rahul Gandhi, Sadhguru and several other Indian celebrities.
These celebrities’ toots are the same as their tweets at the moment. This would suggest that they might not be exclusively tooting.
There is also a Tooter Pro version for members to upgrade to. However, as of this moment, the benefits of selecting a Pro version are not clear.
