Double lung transplant performed by Hyderabad doctors
A team of doctors in Hyderabad performed a double lung transplant on a COVID-19 patient. This first of its kind procedure was performed by doctors at the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).
32-year-old Rizwan from Chandigarh in Punjab was suffering from a severe lung problem called sarcoidosis, after contracting COVID-19. His both lungs were severely damaged; this condition eventually led to fibrosis of the lungs.
Besides, his oxygen requirement increased from 15 litres /minute to 50 litres /minute. A lung transplant was the only option for him to cure.
While he has been waiting for his double transplant for the past eight weeks, a brain-dead patient’s lungs came to his rescue.
The lungs were taken from a brain-dead person in Kolkata. Dr Sandeep Attawar, who is an expert in performing heart and lung transplant surgeries in the country, led the surgery. He successfully performed this unique surgery along with his team.
Dr Attawar has more than 24 years of experience in performing surgeries. This veteran doctor so far performed more than 12,000 heart surgeries, and over 250 transplant surgeries for lungs, heart, and artificial heart implants (LVAD).
He said that after identifying that the lungs of a brain-dead person were matched, they were airlifted to Hyderabad. Despite the procedure being complex, it was successful. The timely transplant helped save the patient.
However, the patient needs close monitoring and careful drug control for at least six weeks. He has to live in a bio-bubble environment.
Rizwan was discharged on Friday. He was happy returning home. He said that he had no hopes on his life before surgery, but now he is happy about getting a new life. He thanked the doctors who performed the surgery and saved his life.
