States to get majority in the new power approach | Fusion - WeRIndia

There is a new power equation forming between the centre and states. The ministry of power is willing to let states, which approach central generation utilities for projects in their territory, to hold 85 percent of electricity from such units.

The new approach is formed to encourage state governments to walk the extra mile in order to make their projects even better than they are now. Due to the higher power share, more state governments will be cooperating with the centre. This will make it easy to expedite land acquisition, environmental and forest clearances, water allocation, relief and rehabilitation etc.

The new planned approach to power distribution can help states like West Bengal, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana immediately. All these states have already approached NTPC, NHPC and SJVN in order to set up their large power plants. The states have also made demands to keep 85 percent to 100 percent of the power, which these projects generate, for themselves.

Power ministry officials have stated that the ministry has no problem to allow the states to consume 85 percent of the power projects set up by the central utilities. They stated that 15 percent of the power would have to remain under the control of center as unallocated quota. This is to meet sudden demand or shortfall in any region or state.
