Things to know about persistent depressive disorder
Depression is the second leading cause of deaths across the world. People normally get depressed when they encounter hopeless and helpless situations in their lives. There are many reasons for it.
There is another variation of depression which may be seen in high-functioning individuals. This is known as a persistent depressive disorder (PDD).
Unlike regular depression, these people do not appear sad or distressed. They have skills and capabilities and are functioning high in certain areas, but not in other areas. They are unhappy even though they achieve big things.
They have milder but persistent symptoms. They are compelled to work hard to achieve things. When this need is not fulfilled, they tend to self-blame which results in depression.
Here are the signs and symptoms of people who suffer from a persistent depressive disorder:
- Usually, they set high goals. They are not interested in accepting compliments as they feel they can perform better than what they do.
- They do not deny the work that is assigned to them especially by their superiors.
- They fear guilt and obligation. Anxiety and depression may coexist in them.
- Irritability, which is commonly seen in depression, is not seen in these individuals. However, they often display such emotions on their loved ones without any obvious reason. Later, they feel guilty.
- They sleep too much or too little.
- They can cover their depression with their skills.
- They prefer isolation which results in the distance in relationships with peers and kin.
- To reduce their depression, they may depend on alcohol or drugs. Eating disorders and engagement in excessive video game playing may be seen. This may often worsen their depression and anxiety.
Well educated and rich people are more likely to have PDD. And individuals who have a family history of depression are more vulnerable to this condition. Self-care is very important for these individuals. Nutritious food, exercise and rest are crucial.
