Watershed Conservation | Fusion - WeRIndia

Cities in India like Mumbai, Gurgaon, Rajkot and similar cities which suffer from water pollution have a lot of potential to reduce their pollution by 10 percent if they practice watershed conservation and river bank restoration. TNC (The Nature Conservancy) has recently released an Urban Water Blueprint which can be very helpful for these cities. TNC, which is the world’s largest environmental organization in world, gave an in depth analysis of 2,000 watersheds which are serving 500 cities.

The blueprints given can provide recommendations which are practical and backed by science. They are also helpful in strategies which are most cost effective. The food chain McDonald’s even stated that these strategies will help in reducing water pollution by 10 percent. Furthermore the strategies are cost effective so the states can implement these easily.

It is found that watershed conservation is helpful not only economically but also environmentally. They can be used for developed and developing cities alike. These sheds would help in reducing water treatment costs by 5 percent and provide millions of Indian with clean drinking water. The advantage here is that by improving water quality at the source would meant that less than 1000 hectares of conservation action would be needed to achieve a 10 percent reduction in sediment or unwanted nutrient pollution.
