India and Russia Bilateral Summit

India and Russia Bilateral Summit

The India-Russia bilateral summit was held for two days in India. Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India.

Various official talks have been held between the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Both leaders released a joint statement on the development of this summit. They discussed about the consequences of US’ action to withdraw from Iran deal.

Eights important pacts have been signed by both the countries including defence, space, nuclear energy and economy.

PM Modi said that both India and Russia have common struggles like terrorism, climate change and Afghanistan and Indo-Pacific events. So, supporting each other mutually benefits both.

President Putin stated that both India and Russia will work on fighting against international terrorism and human trafficking.

India and Russia inked the crucial US$ 5 billion deal for five advanced S-400 Triumf air missile defence systems.

The US had warned that it would implement punitive sanctions on a nation if it has substantial business deals with the Russians.

In this context, the signing of S-400 deal would probably impact the Indo-US relations due to India’s trading with Russia.

The purchase violates sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).

CAATSA was established by the US Congress.

Yet, India signed with Russia as it would boost the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) arm.

S-400 is one of the most famous long-range surface-to-air missile defence system of Russia. It is an upgraded version of the S-300 systems.

The missile is manufactured by Almaz-Antey. Since 2007, the missile system has been in service in Russia.

Russia is selling this lethal missile system to several other countries.

China was the first foreign country to buy this from Russia.
