The relation between India and Myanmar is now being developed even more. As Myanmar is set to become a strong democracy, both countries agreed to improve their ties in various issues like security and trade. The agreement was made during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar’s top leader Aung Sung Suu Kyi.

Three agreements were signed during the talks between the two countries. They are for better cooperation in power, banking and insurance sectors. The countries also agreed to improve relations regarding oil and gas, agriculture, renewable energy and health care.

Suu Kyi visited India for the first time after her National League for Democracy got into power in Myanmar replacing the military junta. Due to a Myanmar constitutional provision, Suu Kyi could not become Myanmar’s president. But she has complete control over the government with the position of State Councilor and Foreign Minister.

India welcomed Suu Kyi well with Modi calling India as a second home for her and that India and Myanmar will continue the long friendship. Since Suu Kyi has done her graduation from Delhi University, Modi said welcome back.

Suu Kyi talked about how leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru were a great inspiration in the struggle for democracy for Myanmar.

Indian PM Narendra Modi talked about how the security of the two countries is aligned because they are close and friendly. Hence, an agreement was signed between the two countries to further increase security in areas near border and areas which are of strategic interest to each other.

Myanmar is considered as an important strategic location for India. It shares a 1,640-km-long border with several Indian northeastern states including Nagaland and Manipur.

Modi said that the two countries also agreed to improve relations regarding agriculture, power, and renewable energy. He assured that India will support Myanmar in its path to becoming modern and prosperous.
