India’s medal expectations at Rio Olympics
Here are some predictions of what medals India could win in the upcoming Rio Olympics.
Shooting
Raninder Singh, president of the National Rifle Association of India, gave a prediction that India could return with six medals which is what India got in 2012 (two silver and four bronze). This might seem a bit out of reach, but there is hope for India this time.
However, 2008 gold medalist Abhinav Bindra and 2012 bronze medalist Gagan Narang both seem to be in a weaker form than their former glory. 29 year old Jitu Rai seems to have the best chance of getting a medal.
Archery
India hasn’t exactly performed well in Archery much. Deepika Kumari, a former World No 1 in 2012 is now at 12th place. She says that her inner “demons” can only he conquered by an Olympic medal. In order for India to get a medal, the South Koreans would be prove to be a huge challenge.
Badminton
Saina Nehwal who is playing her third Olympics, is definitely India’s best bet of a medal in badminton. She was the former world No 1 and won her second Australian Open title in June. However, she did lose to Tai Tzu-ying of Chinese Taipei, Spain’s Carolina Marin and China’s Li Xuerui, the Olympics champion, in Super Series events. However, she seems to be fully confident this time. PV Sindhu is also another great contender.
Gymnastics
Dipa Karmakar is a good contender for a Gymnastics medal this year. She successfully attempted the dangerous Produvona vault at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games making her one of only five gymnasts in the world to do so. Now many people are wondering if she is actually going to win a medal in Rio. She however is definitely targeting to hit a medal. Considering her feats, there is a good chance for her success.
