Tucked away in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district, the village of Deepavali offers a rare and heartwarming take on one of India’s most beloved festivals.

Located in Gara Mandal and home to around 1,000 residents, this small village doesn’t just celebrate Diwali; it lives its legend.

According to local lore, centuries ago, a pious king was returning from the nearby Sri Kurmanadha temple when he suddenly collapsed.

The villagers rushed to help, lighting oil lamps and offering water. Touched by their compassion and the light that guided him through the darkness, the king asked the name of the village.

When he learned it had none, he declared the name of the village shall be known as Deepavali from that day.

Since then, the village has carried forward that moment of kindness with pride. Today, Deepavali’s Diwali celebrations are deeply rooted in ritual and community.

The five-day festival begins with Sthanadheere Puja and Pitra Karma, where families honour their ancestors and seek blessings.

The Sondi community, in particular, holds a special Pitra Puja, wearing new clothes that mark respect and renewal.

Mornings in the village begin with prayers, while evenings transform it into a glowing mosaic of lamps.

Every home lights up, creating an ambience that reflects both spiritual and cultural richness. Unlike the urban rush, celebrations here are unhurried, focused on togetherness and tradition.

Families gather to welcome their sons-in-law with traditional feasts and customs, similar to those observed during Sankranti rituals.

Shared meals, sweet exchanges, and folk performances fill the evenings, bringing everyone together in joyous celebration.

Deepavali village is more than its name; it’s a symbol of how stories, kindness, and community can create lasting heritage.

With every lamp lit, the village not only celebrates Diwali but also keeps alive the legend that gave it light.

In a world that often races forward, this village offers a peaceful pause, where culture, memory, and celebration shine together.
