Air India cuts international flights after tragic crash
Air India has announced a 15% reduction in its international wide-body aircraft services following a deadly crash.
The tragic incident occurred on June 12, when Air India flight AI-171 crashed in Ahmedabad, killing 241 people.
As a result, the airline will reduce services between June 18 and 20. These cuts will remain in place until at least mid-July.
The move aims to increase reserve aircraft availability and manage any unexpected disruptions.
Air India has assured passengers that they can either reschedule their flights at no extra cost or receive a full refund.
The airline is also trying to accommodate international travellers on alternate flights. A revised schedule, effective June 20, will be shared soon.
In an official statement, Air India expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families.
The airline is working closely with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Government of Gujarat to support the affected families.
Volunteers from Air India and the Tata Group are present in Ahmedabad. They are helping at hospitals and arranging transportation for families and the deceased.
Meanwhile, investigations into the crash are ongoing. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered enhanced safety inspections.
So far, 26 of Air India’s 33 Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft have been cleared for service. Inspections for the remaining aircraft will conclude shortly.
As a precaution, Air India will also inspect its Boeing 777 fleet. The airline confirmed full cooperation with the AAIB, DGCA, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation to ensure passenger and crew safety.
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran broke his silence on June 18. He expressed his grief over this tragic incident. He pledged full support to the victims’ families and vowed to stand by them always.
Air India emphasised that safety remains its top priority. Despite the tragedy, the airline continues to act swiftly to support affected passengers and improve flight safety standards.
