Lufthansa Hyderabad flight turns back mid-air after bomb threat
In a concerning incident highlighting aviation safety, a Lufthansa flight bound for Hyderabad made a mid-air U-turn on Sunday evening and returned to Frankfurt.
The flight, LH752, took off from Frankfurt at 2:14 pm local time. It was scheduled to land at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport early Monday.
About two hours into the journey, sources reported a bomb threat. However, Lufthansa stated the flight was diverted due to a lack of landing permission in Hyderabad.
The airline said the aircraft landed safely back in Frankfurt by around 5:30 pm local time.
A female passenger, travelling to visit her mother in Hyderabad, shared her experience. She said the crew informed them mid-air that the flight would return to Germany. Lufthansa provided passengers with overnight accommodation.
Flight tracker data confirmed the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner’s diversion. The aircraft, initially en route to Hyderabad, began its turn back a few hours after departure.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad airport authorities have not released any official comment. Air Traffic Control (ATC) in Hyderabad reportedly received a message from the flight crew regarding the return shortly after takeoff.
Despite the initial bomb threat report, Lufthansa has not officially confirmed this as the reason.
A Frankfurt Airport spokesperson confirmed the aircraft’s return but advised contacting federal police or the airline for further details.
All passengers were safe. The rescheduled flight is expected to depart Monday morning.
Passengers were accommodated without extra charges. This incident has raised concerns about mid-air security alerts and international coordination.
If the issue was indeed a bomb threat, an investigation could follow. Lufthansa has yet to clarify the final cause of the diversion. Meanwhile, passengers wait for further instructions.
The airline has not indicated whether refunds or compensation will be offered beyond the provided accommodation.
International aviation authorities may now review protocols for such diversions. The total cost of disruption remains unclear but could run into several lakhs of rupees.
