The Indian Army’s much-anticipated induction of the first batch of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters has been delayed. And, now it is expected by December 2024.

This marks a seven-month postponement from the original delivery schedule of May and July, attributed to manufacturing setbacks.

Boeing has confirmed that three helicopters will arrive in December, followed by three more in January 2025.

The AH-64E Apache is widely regarded as the world’s most advanced multi-role attack helicopter. The helicopter boasts cutting-edge technology.

It features greater thrust and lift capabilities. In addition, it will enhance survivability and cognitive decision-making systems.

Known for its versatility, it can perform various mission roles. Some of these roles include countering armoured threats and supporting ground forces in diverse terrains.

India finalized the purchase of six Apache helicopters in February 2020 through an $800 million deal signed during former U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit.

These helicopters will significantly boost the Army’s aerial combat capabilities, complementing its modernization efforts.

The Apaches will primarily be deployed in desert regions, where their performance in countering armoured threats can be fully utilized.

In March 2023, the Army established the 451 Aviation Squadron in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, to operate the Apaches.

This addition will serve as the second attack layer in the Army’s arsenal, supplementing the Indigenous Light Combat Helicopter. This helicopter has been developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

India is the 16th country to incorporate the Apache into its defence systems.

The Indian Air Force already operates 22 AH-64E helicopters, which underscores the importance of aircraft to India’s defence strategy.

In addition to Apaches, the Indian Army employs Rudra helicopters, the armed version of the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH).

Together, these aircraft reinforce the Army’s aerial strength. Thus, it ensures readiness for modern combat scenarios and enhances its ability to counter evolving threats effectively.
