Defence minister inaugurates 75 New BRO infrastructure projects

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated 75 new infrastructure projects developed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on October 12, 2024.

The total value of these projects is ₹2,236 crore.

These projects include 22 roads, 51 bridges, and two other key facilities, spread across 11 states and Union Territories, further bolstering connectivity and strategic defence preparedness.

The newly launched projects cover several regions, with 19 in Jammu and Kashmir, 11 in Ladakh, and 18 in Arunachal Pradesh.

In addition, nine in Uttarakhand, six in Sikkim, five in Himachal Pradesh, two each in West Bengal and Rajasthan, and one project each in Nagaland, Mizoram, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

The inauguration event was held virtually from the Trishakti Corps headquarters in Sukna, West Bengal.

One of the significant highlights of the projects is the Kupup-Sherathang Road in Sikkim.

It links the Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg to the Zuluk axis, improving regional connectivity and infrastructure.

During the inauguration, Rajnath Singh said these projects underscore the government’s dedication to strengthening border infrastructure while promoting socio-economic development in remote areas.

The minister added that the new infrastructure aligns with the government’s focus on improving defence capabilities and contributes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of a Developed India by 2047.

The BRO has completed 111 projects in 2024, with a combined worth of ₹3,751 crore.

These include the much-anticipated Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, which Prime Minister Modi inaugurated earlier this year.

Praising the BRO’s efforts, the minister acknowledged their challenges while completing these projects in difficult terrain and extreme weather conditions.

He emphasized that, unlike previous governments, the current administration prioritizes border development for both strategic and economic reasons.

He also highlighted the significant increase in funding for BRO, with ₹6,500 crore allocated in the 2024-25 budget, further enhancing its role in national defence and border region development.
