Chittam reviving Indian culture through playful learning
Emerging from a deeply personal journey, Chittam was born out of a vision to connect children with Indian culture in fun, relatable ways.
Founded in January 2023 in Chennai by Charanya Kumar, the edutainment startup transforms the way children learn about India’s heritage. Charanya’s path to founding Chittam wasn’t easy.
Despite holding a Bachelor’s in Computer Science (SRM University), a Master’s in Game Design (University of North Carolina, Charlotte), and an MBA from INSEAD, her life was shaped by significant personal challenges, from relationship difficulties and three miscarriages to career roadblocks.
Yet, her resilience was fueled by the cultural wisdom drawn from Indian stories and folklore, which eventually became her source of strength and inspiration.
After spending 11 years abroad, Charanya returned to India determined to make a difference in education.
A turning point came when she overheard 13-year-olds discussing depression at a school. This disturbing insight prompted her to create something that could bring joy, healing, and cultural grounding to children.
With support from Rangaraj Pandey, Founder-CEO of Chanakyaa TV, Chittam was officially launched.
The startup creates a wide range of educational and interactive products, including board games, card games, puppetry kits, and activity books, that teach Indian culture, regional languages, traditions, philosophies, and spirituality.
These products are not only engaging and informative but also eco-friendly, crafted by local artisans.
Chittam makes learning enjoyable while helping children stay rooted in their heritage.
Customers benefit from thoughtfully designed games that foster cultural pride, emotional resilience, and curiosity.
Parents appreciate the educational value, while kids enjoy the immersive, screen-free play.
In just four months of its launch, Chittam achieved ₹10 lakhs in revenue, driven by online sales, exhibitions, and word-of-mouth.
It has also received sponsorships from HNIs, enabling game donations to underprivileged communities.
Currently bootstrapped, Chittam aims to continue its mission to make cultural learning accessible, engaging, and impactful.
